JOSÉ ROBERTO BASSUL

Contemporary of the modernist epic of Brasilia, the “Concretista” movement stood out in the Brazilian artistic environment. Its essence was an abstract and geometric aesthetic, free of representations. Although traveled parallel paths, the urbanism of “Lúcio Costa” and the concretism of different slopes are in the aesthetic language that the observer perceives as he / she carefully traverses the open spaces of the Capital. Moving away from the well-known iconography of the monuments of “Brasília” and finding signs and visual cuts that reconfigure concrete urban aesthetics in urban space, the essay "Concretist Landscape" celebrates this affinity. In these images, both the objective rationality of the São Paulo concretists and the subjective experimentation of the Rio de Janeiro’s neoconcretists are present. The dynamics of the formal elements, the expressiveness of the planes and the linear and spiral rhythms of the concretists can be synthesized in the superquadra itself, perceived here as a penetrable labyrinth of “Hélio Oiticica”.  "Concretist Landscape", in short, is an invitation to look.
