LUCA MEOLA
City of “Garoa”. In the city of São Paulo, many couples kiss in public, especially in the metropolitan area. It is a curious phenomenon that is frequently observed being lost by the central area of this megalopolis also known as the City of “Garoa”. The “Garoa” is a thin, almost invisible rain; the impression is that the drops float in the atmosphere rather than fall from the sky. In addition to the climate, for many people from São Paulo, two are the great problems of this city: displacement and security. Displacement is the time it takes to move from one place to another and - to well live in this megalopolis - anyone should work and find a girlfriend in the same neighborhood where they live. It is likely that the couple kissing on the subway are so passionate because then, once separated does not know exactly when they will have another opportunity to meet again.
Security is obviously linked to a very unequal society and São Paulo is a city perceived by most people as very dangerous. Assalts and robberies are in the order of the day, and the practice of robbery and assault is so commonplace that it has become almost ritualized. However, the subway is perceived as a place where you can lower your guard and engage in a passionate kiss, as if there was no outside world, this world whose streets scares so much. With a look away, as a foreigner, with a personal approach and voyeuristic rather than photojournalistic, the intent of this project is to record the “Garoa” City.
